A school board is a catalyst of progressive change for a district. Its job is to set the vision and goals for the district and hold the director of schools accountable for achieving results.

Our purpose

To ensure an effective mETROPOLITAN BOARD OF EDUCATION through eXCELLENT GOVERNANCE

Why effective school boards matter

We believe that Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools has the most important job in our city: educating our children. But there are many challenges. Metro Schools is a large organization with more than 10,000 employees and 80,000 students. Three out of every four students are economically disadvantaged, and only one out of every three students enter middle school reading on grade level. Effective school district leadership is critical to making sure every student graduates from high school prepared for college, career and life.

Nashvillians for an Effective School Board PAC endorses Metropolitan Board of Education members who demonstrate the following characteristics:

·         Be a strong public education advocate

·         Demonstrate commitment to the highest standards of achievement for all students

·         Support accountability at every level throughout Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools, including accountability for                      members of the Board of Education

·         Understand the need for effective financial management of the school system and make budget decisions that advance                the academic goals of the district

·         Understand that the role of the School Board is to set policy for the school system

·         Empower the Director of Schools to implement Board policies and achieve academic results

·         Allocate the necessary time and energy as a board member to help MNPS achieve its goals

·         Communicate and work collaboratively with other board members, internal & external stakeholders including the Mayor              and Metro Council, to set and achieve district goals

·         Exhibit the highest personal and ethical qualities, which serve as a positive role model for our children and our community

·         Conduct the public’s business with professionalism and decorum
